Intralipid Infusion Therapy

Prepared by Almond Blossoms Fertility Clinic

Intralipid Infusion Therapy

Intralipid infusion therapy is used in some cases to help prevent recurrent miscarriages and involves the intravenous administration of a sterile fat mixture containing soybean oil, egg yolk phospholipids, glycerin, and water. Originally developed for nutritional support, intralipid has been explored in reproductive medicine for women with recurrent implantation failure (RIF) or recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) linked to elevated natural killer (NK) cell activity.

How It Works

Natural killer cells are a type of white blood cell involved in the immune system’s defence. In some women, heightened NK cell activity may interfere with embryo implantation or contribute to miscarriage. Intralipid infusion is thought to help regulate immune function by reducing NK cell activity, creating a more favourable environment for implantation and pregnancy maintenance.

When It Is Used

At Almond Blossoms, intralipid infusion therapy may be considered for patients with multiple unsuccessful IVF cycles or recurrent miscarriages, particularly when immunological testing shows elevated NK cell activity. The decision to use intralipid therapy is personalised after a thorough review of medical history and test results.

Treatment Protocol

A typical protocol involves administering 100 mL of 20% intralipid solution intravenously over about one hour. Infusions are usually given once before an IVF or IUI procedure, once after embryo transfer, and in some cases, a third time after confirmation of pregnancy. All infusions are performed in the clinic under medical supervision to monitor for safety and potential reactions.

Safety and Side Effects

Intralipid infusion is generally well tolerated, but side effects may include headache, nausea, flushing, dizziness, or allergic reactions—especially in those allergic to soy, egg products, or fish. Patients should inform their clinician of any allergies and report symptoms such as fever or chills after the procedure, which could indicate infection.

Evidence and Considerations

The use of intralipid infusion in fertility treatment is considered an “add-on” therapy. Some research suggests potential benefit for specific groups, such as women with elevated NK cell activity, but overall scientific evidence remains inconclusive. Major reproductive authorities, including the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), state that there is not enough high-quality evidence to recommend routine use. The decision to proceed should follow an informed discussion of potential benefits, uncertainties, and risks.
