Sperm Freezing and Storage
What Is Sperm Freezing?
Sperm freezing (also called sperm cryopreservation) is the process of collecting, freezing, and storing sperm for future use. This allows men to preserve their fertility in situations where it may later be compromised or delayed.
Sperm freezing has been practiced safely for over 40 years, commonly used in future fertility treatments through assisted reproductive technologies like IUI or IVF.
Why Consider Sperm Freezing?
Men may choose sperm freezing for a variety of medical, practical, or personal reasons.
- Medical treatment risks: Before chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgery that could impact fertility (e.g., for cancer patients).
- Decreasing sperm count or quality, such as in cases of varicocele or other reproductive health conditions.
- Difficulty producing a sample on the day of fertility treatment or egg collection.
- Occupational risks: High-risk jobs (e.g., military, sports, or frequent travel) where fertility might be endangered.
- Age-related planning: While male fertility declines more gradually, studies suggest potential risks (e.g., support future fertility treatment planning) associated with advanced paternal age. Preserving sperm at a younger age offers an additional safeguard.
Sperm freezing is currently the only proven method for preserving male fertility.
How Does It Work?
Initial Consultation & Screening
You will be screened for infectious diseases (e.g., HIV, Hepatitis B/C) as per local and who guidelines.
Sample Collection
- You will produce a semen sample at the clinic in our designated collection room.
- Multiple samples may be requested over several days to optimise storage.
Cryopreservation
- The sperm is mixed with a cryoprotectant and frozen using a method known as slow or controlled-rate freezing.
- The frozen samples are then stored in liquid nitrogen at -196°C.
Storage
- Sperm can be stored for up to 5 years under UAE regulations, with annual renewal required. Extension for another 5 years is possible.
Using Frozen Sperm
When you are ready to conceive, the frozen sperm is thawed and used with assisted reproductive techniques such as:
- IUI (intrauterine insemination)
- IVF (in vitro fertilisation)
- ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection)
Not all sperm survive the thawing process, but many samples remain usable after thawing.
Important Considerations
- While sperm freezing is a safe and well-established procedure, it does not guarantee future pregnancy.
- Success depends on sperm quality, the method of use (IUI, IVF, ICSI), and the age and fertility status of the female partner.
- You may need to freeze more than one sperm samples to increase the chances of a baby during subsequent fertility treatment. Our specialists will advise you accordingly.
- The World Health Organization and global fertility bodies recognise sperm cryopreservation as a standard option for fertility preservation.
